Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has inked a long-term nuclear energy deal with Constellation Energy, marking a major step in its commitment to carbon-free operations.

The agreement will supply Meta’s data centers with 24/7 nuclear-powered electricity, underscoring the company’s focus on sustainability and energy reliability.

Under the terms of the deal, Constellation Energy—America’s largest producer of carbon-free energy—will provide a steady supply of nuclear-generated electricity to support Meta’s growing network of data centers, which underpin the infrastructure for its digital platforms and emerging metaverse initiatives.

“This agreement is a critical move toward achieving our goal of operating with 100% renewable energy around the clock,” said Urvi Parekh, head of renewable energy at Meta.

“Nuclear energy provides the reliability and zero-carbon emissions needed to ensure our data centers operate sustainably at all times.”

Constellation will deliver the clean energy primarily from its nuclear fleet, which produces more than 88% of the carbon-free power in the U.S.

The partnership is also designed to align with Meta’s broader strategy to support grid decarbonization by purchasing energy from sources that match its consumption in real time.

Joe Dominguez, CEO of Constellation Energy, emphasized the significance of the agreement: “Meta’s decision to power its operations with emissions-free nuclear energy is a model for companies aiming to make a real impact in the fight against climate change.

It proves that zero-carbon nuclear is essential for powering the digital economy sustainably.”

The deal comes amid increasing scrutiny over the environmental footprint of large-scale data centers, which consume vast amounts of electricity.

While Meta has already achieved 100% renewable energy matching on an annual basis since 2020, this new partnership advances its goal of matching every megawatt-hour of consumption with carbon-free energy on a 24/7 basis.

The announcement also signals a broader shift in how tech giants approach clean energy procurement.

While solar and wind continue to dominate the renewables landscape, nuclear power is gaining traction as a dependable, carbon-free baseload source—particularly important for energy-intensive operations like AI and cloud computing.

With the demand for digital services and artificial intelligence accelerating, Meta’s deal with Constellation sets a new standard for sustainable innovation and energy accountability in the tech industry.
