Chinese automaker Chery has confirmed that its newest compact crossover, the Omoda C3, will be launched in South Africa in early 2026, adding to the growing list of futuristic vehicles entering the local market.
The announcement follows the vehicle’s global debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in April this year.
The Omoda C3, part of Chery’s upmarket sub-brand Omoda, is aimed at younger, tech-forward drivers and features a bold, sci-fi-inspired design language.
“Our team of designers—average age 28—wanted to build a crossover that captures the spirit of the next generation,” said a Chery spokesperson at the auto show unveiling.
Eye-Catching Design Meets Tech-Driven Cabin
Inspired by “interstellar battleships,” the C3 features geometric contours and a dynamic silhouette reminiscent of high-performance models like the Lamborghini Urus.
The interior echoes this futuristic vision, equipped with a fighter jet-style dashboard, dual digital screens, and a center console designed to house portable gaming devices.
A vertical touchscreen, customizable digital instrument cluster, and wireless gaming controller integration are among the C3’s headline features. The concept is being marketed as a “command center on wheels.”
Powertrain Details Still Under Wraps
Chery has yet to confirm specific engine options, though it is expected that the Omoda C3 will be offered in petrol, hybrid, and potentially all-electric variants. This aligns with Chery’s broader strategy to expand its new energy vehicle (NEV) portfolio in key international markets, including South Africa.
Speaking at a recent media briefing in Beijing, Chery International Vice President Zhang Guibing said: “By 2025, we plan to launch 19 NEVs in the South African market, with the Omoda C3 playing a central role in that expansion.”
Local Market Expectations
The C3 will join the Omoda C5 and C9 in the South African lineup, and is likely to compete in the same price bracket as the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Nissan Magnite. Given South Africa’s growing appetite for feature-rich crossovers, industry analysts predict strong interest.
“South Africans are increasingly looking for tech-heavy cars that deliver value and personality. The C3 is poised to tick both boxes,” said motoring journalist Kabelo Mokoena.
Omoda South Africa has not yet announced official pricing or specifications, but further details are expected to be released closer to the vehicle’s local launch.
Global Rollout Begins October 2025
The Omoda C3 will begin its global rollout in October 2025, with markets in Europe, Asia, and Latin America already confirmed. South Africa is one of the first African countries slated for its introduction, underscoring the country’s importance in Chery’s international growth strategy.
