In a bold move to enhance digital access and affordability, MTN South Africa has launched the groundbreaking MTN R99 smartphone initiative.

This campaign is designed to empower over 1.2 million prepaid customers with affordable 4G smartphones, supporting the country’s broader goal to phase out 2G and 3G networks by the end of 2027.

A Strategic Digital Push

The MTN R99 smartphone initiative comes at a crucial time as South Africa accelerates its digital migration. Many South Africans, particularly those in underserved communities, still rely on older-generation mobile networks.

MTN aims to ease this transition by making modern connectivity affordable and accessible through low-cost smartphones.

Phased Rollout Plan

The initiative is being implemented in three structured phases:

  • Phase 1: The rollout began in Gauteng province, where 5,000 selected customers received a 4G-enabled Itel smartphone. These devices, which usually retail for nearly R740, are being offered for a once-off fee of just R99.

  • Phase 2: Over 130,000 customers across various provinces will receive similar smartphone packages, broadening the reach of the program nationwide.

  • Phase 3: The final phase targets more than 1.1 million customers, ensuring widespread adoption across South Africa before the sunset of 2G and 3G services.

Affordable Access to Modern Technology

The smartphones included in the MTN R99 smartphone initiative are valued between R800 and R1,100, but are heavily subsidized to cost customers only R99.

These devices are SIM-locked to MTN’s network and come equipped with essential apps, ensuring users can immediately benefit from digital services like education, mobile banking, and healthcare access.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility for the program is determined based on customer profiles, including usage patterns, tenure with MTN, and spending behavior. Customers can check their eligibility by dialing a designated USSD code (*142#) and selecting the relevant option under the “gift” menu.

Devices are distributed at participating MTN stores on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last.

Building a Digitally Inclusive Future

The MTN R99 smartphone initiative is part of MTN’s broader vision of creating a connected and digitally empowered society.

By lowering the barrier to smartphone ownership, MTN is not only enabling better communication but also supporting access to economic opportunities, remote learning, and digital public services.

This initiative underscores MTN’s commitment to bridging the digital divide in South Africa and ensuring that no one is left behind in the shift to a more connected future.
