Eligible Social Grant Beneficiaries Not Impacted by Post Office Changes

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has acknowledged Postbank’s recent announcement to discontinue certain services at Post Office branches nationwide.

However, both SASSA and Postbank have reassured beneficiaries that these changes will not negatively affect the payment of social grants.

With the May payment cycle approaching, SASSA Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Themba Matlou, confirmed that all preparations are in place to ensure timely payments to qualifying beneficiaries.

He emphasized that the revised working relationship between Postbank and the Post Office should not cause concern.

“As is standard practice, payments will begin on Tuesday with Older Persons, followed by Disability grants on Wednesday, and Children’s grants thereafter.

A fourth payment day will cater for beneficiaries who may have missed their scheduled dates due to ongoing review processes,” Matlou explained.

He further noted that SASSA remains committed to protecting beneficiaries from any negative effects arising from administrative or operational changes within the agency or its partner institutions.

Current systems, he said, are designed to safeguard beneficiaries and ensure continuity of payments regardless of such adjustments.

Matlou also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the integrity and efficiency of SASSA’s operations. These initiatives aim to enhance service delivery while reducing the risk of fraud both within and outside the organisation.

In addition, SASSA continues to carry out social grant reviews to confirm the eligibility of recipients.

The introduction of the self-service online platform, eLife Certification, has made it easier for beneficiaries to verify their status from home, reducing the need to visit SASSA offices.

“We encourage beneficiaries to respond promptly when requested to undergo reviews by visiting their nearest offices.

Those who are able to use the eLife Certification system should complete the process online instead of coming in person,” Matlou added.
