Why the Continent’s Renewable Energy Market May Have Been Underestimated

For decades, Africa’s renewable energy story has been defined by untapped potential.

Blessed with some of the world’s highest levels of solar irradiation, the continent has nevertheless been portrayed as a relatively small player in the global photovoltaic market, accounting for only a fraction of worldwide installed solar capacity.

That perception, however, may be fundamentally flawed.

According to the Africa Solar Outlook 2026, Africa’s solar industry is significantly larger—and expanding much faster—than previously believed.

Drawing on improved market intelligence, including Chinese photovoltaic export data, the report argues that millions of solar panels installed across factories, warehouses, mines, farms, commercial buildings and rural communities have never been fully reflected in official statistics.

The implication is profound. Rather than an emerging market waiting for investment, Africa may already be one of the world’s most dynamic solar frontiers, with a rapidly expanding distributed energy economy that has quietly matured beyond conventional measurements.

“Africa has long been perceived as a marginal solar market,” says John van Zuylen, CEO of the Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA).

“The Africa Solar Outlook 2026 demonstrates that this perception no longer reflects reality. Solar is already far more widespread than previously believed, and Africa is now experiencing the fastest solar growth of any region worldwide.”

For governments, infrastructure investors, engineering firms, EPC contractors and equipment manufacturers, this is more than a revision of industry statistics.

It represents a shift in how Africa’s renewable energy market should be valued, financed and planned for over the coming decade.

The Solar Economy That Official Statistics Missed

One of the report’s most compelling arguments is that Africa has developed what could best be described as a hidden solar economy.

Traditional market assessments have focused primarily on utility-scale solar farms announced by governments or independent power producers. While these projects remain important, they represent only one segment of a much broader market.

Across the continent, thousands of privately financed solar installations are being deployed every year without ever appearing in national electricity databases.

Rooftop systems on manufacturing plants, battery-backed solar installations at logistics hubs, photovoltaic arrays powering mining operations, irrigation systems for commercial agriculture, telecommunications towers, hospitals, schools and residential developments all contribute to electricity generation but frequently escape official reporting mechanisms.

As the report notes, relying solely on publicly reported projects significantly understates the true scale of Africa’s solar deployment.

This observation aligns with wider industry thinking.

The Global Solar Council has increasingly described Africa’s expansion as being driven by two parallel markets—large utility-scale projects supported by governments and development finance institutions, alongside a rapidly growing commercial and distributed solar sector financed almost entirely by private investment.

The latter is becoming one of the defining characteristics of Africa’s energy transition.

Why Previous Estimates Underestimated the Market

Historically, installed solar capacity has been calculated using project announcements, government records and utility commissioning reports.

While reasonably effective for tracking large solar farms, this methodology struggles to capture distributed generation.

Commercial rooftop systems rarely attract public announcements. Industrial facilities install solar primarily to reduce operating costs rather than generate publicity.

Many residential systems are imported and installed through private distributors, while mini-grids and agricultural installations often fall outside conventional electricity reporting frameworks.

Recognising these limitations, the Africa Solar Outlook supplements traditional market intelligence with Chinese photovoltaic export statistics.

Given China’s dominant role as the world’s largest manufacturer and exporter of solar equipment, export volumes provide an additional indicator of equipment likely installed across African markets.

“Chinese companies are the main drivers in Africa’s green transition,” says Cynthia Angweya-Muhati, Acting CEO of the Kenya Renewable Energy Association. “They are aggressively investing in and building robust supply chains in Africa’s green energy ecosystem.”

The integration of these additional datasets paints a dramatically different picture of the continent’s renewable energy landscape.

A Market Nearly Three Times Larger Than Expected

Perhaps the report’s most headline-grabbing conclusion is the revised estimate of Africa’s installed solar capacity.

Using conventional reporting methods, operational solar capacity had previously been estimated at approximately 23.4 GW.

However, after incorporating Chinese export data and additional market intelligence, the report estimates installed capacity at approximately 63.9 GW—almost 2.75 times higher than earlier assessments.

Such a revision is extraordinary.

Few industries experience upward revisions of this magnitude, particularly across an entire continent.

More importantly, the findings suggest that Africa’s renewable energy transition has advanced much further than investors, policymakers and even many industry participants have realised.

“Solar + storage is the hope of Africa,” says Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the Global Solar Council. “This is the technology that can bring energy access, sustainable development, green growth and resilience to natural disasters and extreme weather.”

A New Investment Narrative

For investors, market size influences virtually every financing decision.

Markets perceived as small often struggle to attract institutional capital because they appear fragmented, immature and operationally risky.

A substantially larger installed base tells a different story.

It suggests more experienced EPC contractors, stronger installer networks, expanding maintenance ecosystems, deeper technical expertise and increasingly sophisticated supply chains.

In other words, the foundations of a mature industry are already taking shape.

“Africa’s solar boom is remarkable, showing just how quickly we can deploy clean energy when technology, demand and ambition come together,” says Zoësa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation. “Solar is becoming more accessible, more efficient and—most importantly—cheaper every year.”

For infrastructure investors searching for high-growth energy markets, Africa increasingly appears less like a future opportunity and more like an investment destination whose true scale has only recently begun to emerge.

Why This Matters for Construction

The implications extend well beyond the energy sector.

Every additional megawatt of distributed solar requires supporting construction activity—from structural engineering and roofing systems to electrical infrastructure, battery storage facilities, substations and grid interconnections.

Industrial parks, manufacturing plants, logistics centres, shopping malls, hospitals and commercial office developments are increasingly integrating solar generation into their design from the outset.

For engineering firms and contractors, renewable energy is no longer a specialist niche. It is becoming a standard component of modern industrial and commercial construction across Africa.

Looking Beyond Installed Capacity

The report also challenges another longstanding assumption—that installed megawatts alone are sufficient to measure progress.

“Africa is characterized by significant diversity in country size, population, economic structure, and power-sector maturity,” the report observes, noting that comparisons based purely on installed capacity are “inherently limited.”

Instead, AFSIA evaluates countries using relative indicators such as installed watts per capita and solar’s contribution to national electricity generation.

Viewed through this lens, countries including Namibia, South Africa, Seychelles, Mauritius and Tunisia emerge among the continent’s strongest performers—not necessarily because they have the largest absolute capacity, but because solar plays a proportionately greater role within their national energy systems.

The findings demonstrate that Africa’s renewable energy transition is far more geographically diverse than headline capacity figures alone would suggest.

The Bigger Picture

Perhaps the most significant contribution of the Africa Solar Outlook 2026 is not simply providing updated statistics—it is reframing Africa’s renewable energy narrative.

For years, discussions centred on the continent’s potential.

Today, the evidence increasingly points to implementation.

Factories are installing rooftop photovoltaic systems. Mining companies are investing in hybrid microgrids. Distribution centres are integrating battery storage. Commercial agriculture is embracing solar-powered irrigation.

Businesses are turning to distributed generation to improve energy security and reduce operating costs.

Taken together, these developments suggest Africa’s solar economy has quietly evolved into a market that is larger, more sophisticated and considerably more commercially significant than official statistics have long implied.

“With Africa’s energy demand expected to grow eight-fold by 2050 and the continent holding 60% of the world’s best solar resources, solar paired with battery storage is critical to deliver affordable, reliable power at scale,” says Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All.

For construction companies, EPC contractors, equipment manufacturers and investors, the message is unmistakable.

Africa’s solar revolution is no longer a story about future potential.

It is already happening—and it is considerably bigger than most of the industry ever realised.
