Toyota Unveils All-New 2026 Hilux: South Africa’s Favourite Bakkie Gets Bold Makeover

DIY TRENDS

Toyota South Africa has confirmed that the highly anticipated ninth-generation Hilux will arrive on local shores in 2026, marking a significant milestone for the country’s perennial best-selling vehicle.

The new model will continue to be manufactured at Toyota’s Prospecton plant near Durban, maintaining the bakkie’s strong South African heritage.

A Fresh Face for an Icon

The 2026 Hilux represents an extensive upgrade rather than a complete redesign, building upon the robust architecture that has made it a staple on South African roads for half a century.

The front end has been dramatically reimagined with slimmer, more aggressive headlights and bold ‘TOYOTA’ block lettering positioned above a wide honeycomb-style grille, giving the legendary bakkie a more commanding road presence.

The rear section has also been completely overhauled, delivering a more rugged and contemporary appearance that aligns with modern pickup truck design trends while maintaining the Hilux’s unmistakable character.

Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, Toyota has retained the proven 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that has earned a reputation for reliability and capability.

However, the 2026 model introduces an innovative option: a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that promises improved fuel efficiency and enhanced performance.

Buyers will have their choice of six-speed automatic or manual transmissions, along with traditional 4×4 and 4×2 drivetrain configurations to suit various needs, from urban commuting to serious off-road adventures.

Interior Revolution

Where the new Hilux truly distinguishes itself from its predecessor is in the cabin. Toyota has completely redesigned the dashboard, bringing the work-focused bakkie firmly into the digital age.

A floating 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes centre stage, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for seamless smartphone integration.

Complementing the infotainment display is a matching 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that provides drivers with customizable information at a glance.

Other modern conveniences include an electronic park brake, wireless phone charging, and improved interior materials that elevate the Hilux’s premium credentials.

Electric Future on the Horizon?

In an intriguing development, Toyota has revealed an electric variant of the Hilux called the “Travo-e” in Thailand. This battery-powered version features dual electric motors producing 144 kilowatts and a 59.2 kilowatt-hour battery pack that offers a range of over 300 kilometres.

While Toyota South Africa has not confirmed whether the electric Hilux will be available locally, the announcement signals the brand’s commitment to electrifying even its most traditional and rugged vehicles as the automotive industry transitions toward sustainable mobility.

Continuing a Legacy

The Hilux has held the title of South Africa’s best-selling vehicle for an impressive 50 years, a testament to its durability, versatility, and value proposition.

From construction sites to family road trips, from farming operations to urban adventures, the Hilux has become an integral part of South African life.

With the 2026 model, Toyota aims to preserve the qualities that have made the Hilux a national icon while incorporating modern technology, improved comfort, and enhanced efficiency to meet the evolving needs of South African consumers.

The new Hilux will compete in an increasingly competitive bakkie market that includes strong contenders from Ford, Isuzu, and other manufacturers.

However, with its combination of proven reliability, local manufacturing, and comprehensive dealer network, the 2026 Hilux is well-positioned to continue its decades-long dominance.

Pricing and specific variant details for the South African market are expected to be announced closer to the 2026 launch date.
