South Africa’s Postbank has fired its clearest warning yet to SASSA grant recipients still holding gold cards: switch to the new black card by 31 August 2026 or lose access to your grant payments entirely.
The state-owned bank launched the final phase of its card migration programme on Tuesday, targeting the estimated 600,000 beneficiaries who have yet to make the switch.
The rollout — which began formally on 29 April — forms the concluding chapter of a replacement drive that has been dogged by missed deadlines, chaotic queues and public frustration since it was first attempted in 2024.

“The deadline will not be extended, and customers who miss it risk interruption to their grant payments,” Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thamsanqa Cele said in a statement, striking a firmer tone than the agency has used in previous communications.
Why the old cards must go
The urgency traces back to a 2021 cryptographic security breach that compromised the encryption key underpinning SASSA gold cards, leaving millions of grant recipients exposed to potential fraud.
The South African Reserve Bank subsequently issued Postbank with formal notices in 2021, 2022 and 2023 to replace the cards — but a coordinated rollout only began in September 2024.

By the original March 2025 deadline, only around 1.5 million of the roughly 2.9 million targeted beneficiaries had switched.
The rollout was abandoned mid-stream after scenes of overwhelmed retail staff, long queues and confused elderly recipients became a public relations disaster for both Postbank and SASSA.
Third time the charm?
Postbank says it has learned from the prior failures. Collection points this time include Shoprite, Checkers, USave, and Pick n Pay outlets nationwide — the same retailers used before — but the bank says staffing and communication have been overhauled.
The replacement is free and requires only a valid South African ID document.
Those who have already switched to the black card need take no further action.
Postbank confirmed the black cards carry three free monthly withdrawals, one free card replacement per year, and a free monthly statement.
The bank also emphasised that accounts are shielded from unauthorised deductions.

Postbank has also warned beneficiaries to be vigilant against scammers: the bank will never request a PIN or OTP as part of the card swap process.
Stakes for Postbank
The migration carries institutional weight beyond individual beneficiaries.
Postbank is seeking recognition as a fully licensed Financial Services Provider, and failure to complete the gold card replacement has previously been cited as a condition that could cost the bank its place in SASSA’s National Payment System.
With four months remaining and roughly 600,000 beneficiaries still to act, the pressure is on both sides of the counter.
