Senegal’s Taiba N’Diaye wind power project set for construction

Move follows financial support from US Overseas Private Investment Corp and Denmark's export credit agency EKF.

A major wind power plant in Senegal,Taiba N’Diaye project is set for construction in what Chris Ford, Chief Operating Officer for Lekela, the firm developing the project calls “major milestone for Senegal.”

The move follows a financial support from US Overseas Private Investment Corp and Denmark’s export credit agency EKF.

Once the project is fully operational in less than two years’ time, it will provide over 450,000 MWh of energy per year for over 2 million people

Terming it the Senegal’s  first utility-scale wind project, Mr Ford said that Taiba N’Diaye wind power plant forms a critical component of Senegal’s clean energy strategy.

“The project will create an impact that lasts for generations,” he said.

Situated 70 km north of Dakar, the project, which will operate under the name Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye, will consist of 46 Vestas wind turbines, each able to produce 3.45MW. The project will save over 300,000 tonnes of CO2 emission into the atmosphere per year.

Chris Antonopoulos, Chief Executive Officer at Lekela said that his firm has the right blend of skills and experience to offer best-in class delivery of clean energy projects like this.

‘As today’s milestone demonstrates, getting the mix right can generate lasting benefits for communities and governments,” he explained.

MIGA, the international financial institution provided political risk insurance. The mega wind project is also receiving support from Power Africa.
