In Zambia, the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station has been fully commissioned after the plant’s fifth generator was switched on recently.

The move now means that a total of 750 megawatts will be added to the country’s national grid and  raise power supply in the country by 38 percent. It is a project that was spearheaded by Chinese firm Sinohydro Corporation.

Zambia hopes that the project will help address demand for energy in various sectors such as mining, agriculture, tourism, industries, education, healthcare services as well as homes.

It is the largest  hydropower station in Zambia. The height of the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station is 130.5 meters, with total concrete pouring of 1.3 million cubic meters.

Zambia acknowledges that investment in power has not been at per with demand since  1977 to 2011 a situation the country seeks to rectify.
