SASSA elife certification glitches: Portal Fully Restored

Agency blames integration failures with other government departments; beneficiaries warned non-compliance may result in grant suspension

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that its eLife Certification self-service portal is fully operational again, following a period of technical glitches that prevented thousands of grant beneficiaries from completing the mandatory verification process online and forced many to make costly trips to local SASSA offices.

SASSA attributed the disruptions to system integration failures with other government departments — a dependency that is fundamental to the eLife Certification verification chain.

The agency issued a public apology, stating that the interface breakdowns led directly to the delays, disruptions, and the long queues witnessed at offices across the country.

“The success of eLife Certification depends on the system interface with other departments, and as a result there were system glitches which led to delay and disruptions in completing eLife Certification, leading to long queues at SASSA offices.”

The Sassa elife certification glitches-What Went Wrong

The eLife Certification system is designed to verify that grant beneficiaries are alive and eligible to continue receiving social assistance.

The platform uses biometric verification, including facial recognition, and cross-references identity data with the Department of Home Affairs.

When the integration links between SASSA’s portal and partner departments faltered, the verification process stalled — leaving beneficiaries unable to complete a legally mandated requirement.

Users reported a range of technical errors during the outage period, including profile picture verification components failing to load, authentication messages via SMS, email, and WhatsApp timing out, and the system malfunctioning when accessed from multiple devices.

Beneficiaries Urged to Complete Certification Online

With the portal restored, SASSA has urged all beneficiaries who have internet access and the necessary devices to complete their eLife Certification online, rather than visiting local offices.

The agency stressed that the self-service platform was designed specifically to spare beneficiaries the cost and inconvenience of travelling to branches.

KEY FACTS: SASSA eLife Certification

•         SASSA administers more than 19 million grant payments monthly across South Africa.

•         eLife Certification is a legal requirement under the Social Assistance Act.

•         The process is now completed online using biometric verification via a device with a camera.

•         Beneficiaries specifically flagged for immediate certification must comply within the stipulated timeframe.

•         Failure to certify may result in payment delays or suspension of grants.

•         SASSA may interpret non-compliance as an indication the beneficiary is deceased or fraudulent.

•         May 2026 grant payment dates: Older Persons (5 May), Disability (6 May), Child Support (7 May).

Non-Compliance Carries Serious Consequences

SASSA has issued a clear warning to all grant recipients: failure to complete the eLife Certification process when directed could result in payment delays or outright suspension.

The agency has stated it may treat the absence of certification as evidence that a beneficiary is either deceased or illegitimate, in line with its mandate to prevent fraudulent payments.

The certification drive forms part of SASSA’s broader digital transformation agenda for 2026, aimed at weeding out fraudulent beneficiaries and saving an estimated R3 billion over the next two years.

The agency has also appealed to the public to report suspected fraud through its call centre and official email channels.

How to Complete eLife Certification Online

Beneficiaries require a stable internet connection and a device with a working camera. The steps are as follows:

  • Visit the SASSA self-service portal online.
  • First-time users must register an account using personal details.
  • Log in and select the eLife Certification option from the dashboard.
  • Follow the prompts to complete facial scan biometric verification.
  • Ensure identity details match those held by the Department of Home Affairs.

SASSA’s assurance that the portal issues have been resolved comes as the agency prepares for May 2026 grant disbursements.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to complete certification promptly to avoid any disruption to their monthly payments.
