RWE and Thames Water Announce Major Clean Energy Partnership

DIY TRENDS

London, 19 December 2025 – RWE, the UK’s largest power generator and a world leading renewable energy company, has signed a five-year power purchase agreement with Thames Water, marking a significant step forward in the water utility’s decarbonization efforts.

The agreement will see RWE supply 132 gigawatt hours of clean electricity annually to Thames Water from December 2025 through 2030.

The renewable energy will be sourced from RWE’s Camster onshore wind farm in Caithness, Scotland, which features 25 turbines with a total generation capacity of 50 megawatts.

This substantial supply of wind-generated electricity will power up to 15% of Thames Water’s essential services across its network in London and the Thames Valley, supporting operations that serve millions of customers throughout the region.

The partnership represents a major commitment by both companies to sustainable energy practices. For Thames Water, the agreement provides a reliable source of renewable electricity while helping to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

The utility has been working to align its operations with national climate targets and reduce its environmental impact across its extensive infrastructure network.

The five-year deal also offers Thames Water greater energy cost predictability during a period of volatile energy markets, allowing the company to better plan its operational expenses while maintaining its commitment to environmental responsibility.

RWE’s Camster wind farm, commissioned in 2012, has been a reliable contributor to Scotland’s renewable energy portfolio for over a decade.

This new agreement demonstrates how established renewable infrastructure can continue to play a vital role in supporting the UK’s transition to clean energy across multiple sectors.

The power purchase agreement comes as businesses across the UK are increasingly seeking renewable energy solutions to meet both regulatory requirements and corporate sustainability goals.

The water sector, which requires significant amounts of energy to treat and distribute water and manage wastewater services, represents a key opportunity for renewable energy deployment.

Both companies emphasized that this partnership reflects their shared commitment to sustainability and their roles in helping the UK achieve its net-zero emissions targets.
