Ford Motor Co. is recalling more than 273,000 SUVs in the United States after discovering that front brake lines could leak due to contact with other engine components — a defect that could result in a loss of braking ability and increase the risk of a crash.
The recall affects certain 2022–2024 model year Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue arises when the front brake lines rub against the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, potentially causing the lines to wear down and leak brake fluid.
Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the defect, though the company has received 45 warranty claims as of April 17. The automaker estimates that about 1 percent of the recalled vehicles may actually experience the defect.
The recall is expected to begin formally on May 26. Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters instructing them to bring their SUVs to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for inspection.
If necessary, technicians will replace the front brake lines and the air cleaner outlet pipe free of charge.
Ford has urged vehicle owners to respond promptly to the recall notice to ensure their vehicles are safe to drive. A loss of brake fluid can result in longer stopping distances or, in rare cases, a complete brake failure.
Owners can determine whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website or Ford’s recall portal.
This recall is the latest in a series of safety-related actions by Ford as the company faces heightened regulatory scrutiny and works to address quality concerns across its product lines.
In recent years, Ford has ranked among the top automakers for the number of recalls issued, as it grapples with supply chain complications and the complexity of modern vehicle systems.
A spokesperson for the company said the recall reflects Ford’s ongoing commitment to safety and transparency.
“Our customers’ safety is our top priority,” the spokesperson said. “We are taking proactive steps to resolve this issue as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
The NHTSA advises all vehicle owners to routinely check for open recalls and have repairs completed as soon as possible.
