The South African National Roads Agency has announced a postponement of the Ashburton Bridge demolition on the N3 highway, originally planned for May 9 to 12, 2025.
The demolition will now take place from 8pm on Friday, May 16, until 5am on Sunday, May 18, 2025, requiring a full closure of the N3 near Ashburton during this time.
The closure will impact both northbound and southbound traffic at the Lynnfield and Market Road interchanges, with no access to the N3 allowed from these points.
Drivers will be diverted onto the R103, with northbound vehicles exiting at Lynnfield off-ramp and rejoining at Market Road, while southbound traffic will exit at Market Road and rejoin at Lynnfield.
Pope Elis Drive will remain open but will be managed with stop-and-go controls for local residents only.
According to the provincial specialist geometrics engineer overseeing the project, these closures are necessary to ensure the safe demolition of the Ashburton Bridge as part of ongoing improvements on the N3.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys carefully, anticipate delays due to the limited capacity of the R103 compared to the N3, and follow all posted signs and speed limits during the closure.
The demolition schedule is as follows:
-
May 16, 8pm to midnight: N3 closure begins and demolition starts
-
May 17, full 24-hour closure for continued demolition

May 18, midnight to 5am: final demolition activities, site clearing, and reopening of the N3
Weather conditions may affect the timeline, and updates will be provided through local media outlets.
Authorities apologize for any inconvenience caused but emphasize that the timing was chosen to reduce disruption during off-peak hours.
This important infrastructure project aims to enhance safety and traffic flow on the N3 once completed, despite the temporary inconvenience caused by the demolition work.
