The British infrastructure consultancy firm will act as a strategic delivery partner, providing programme and project management, cost control, risk oversight, and governance services for the 459-kilometre expressway linking Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, with the coastal city of Mombasa.
The project’s lead developer, Everstrong Capital, announced that Turner & Townsend’s participation brings global expertise to ensure delivery standards align with international best practices.
“This partnership will help secure the technical and commercial success of a project of this scale,” the company said in a statement.
The Usahihi Expressway aims to transform Kenya’s primary trade corridor by improving travel times, logistics efficiency, and safety along one of East Africa’s busiest routes.
Once completed, the expressway is expected to significantly boost regional trade and reduce congestion on the existing Mombasa Road.
However, the project still faces regulatory hurdles. Kenya’s Public-Private Partnership Committee earlier this year raised concerns over the initial proposal, stating that it did not meet certain criteria for approval.
The consortium has since undertaken additional feasibility reviews and technical refinements to address these issues.
Despite the ongoing approval process, industry observers see Turner & Townsend’s involvement as a vote of confidence in the project’s long-term viability.
If finalized, the expressway would stand as a flagship example of how global infrastructure partnerships can help deliver large-scale transport transformation across Africa.
