A major airport that is under construction in Rwanda is set to be awarded green certification, making it one of the few green airports in Africa, Frank Rijsberman, the Director-General of Global Green Growth Institute has said.

Bugesera Airport is being constructed in Rilima of Bugesera District a project that Rwanda’s believes will help boost economic integration of the East African Community and enhance  intra-Africa trade.

The project is designed to have a host of green building features promoting resource efficiency and allowing it to be a net zero emission complex.

Funded through a Public Private Partnership, the first phase of the airport is expected to cost an estimated USD414 million.

The airport is expected to facilitate several long-haul flights from Europe, USA and Asia.

The airport will have some of the latest features such as modern cargo handling facilities, capacity to handle about 1.8m passengers annually, 22 check-in counters, six boarding bridges, multiple commercial spaces, among others.

“There is no doubt that green growth is the future for Africa, and that requires us to learn, share experiences and recommit to building a future our children, and their children. Bugesera Airport is one of many projects ,in Rwanda that highlights the need for green growth,” said Rijsberman at the Africa Green Groeth Forum.

The Africa Green Growth Forum is a series of events bringing together investors, policy makers and practitioners from across the continent to share experiences in green growth and climate resilient development.

The Africa Green Growth Forum takes place from26-30 November 2018 in Kigali and is being organised by the Government of Rwanda with support from a range of partners from across the continent and around the world.
