The Phase 3 of Ngong Road dualling construction project whose first phase kicked off in 2016 is 80 per cent complete, Kenya Urban Roads Authority has announced.
The 9.8-kilometre stretch from Dagoretti Corner to Karen Shopping Centre in Nairobi is being constructed at a cost of Ksh2 billion. Kenya hopes that the road project construction will help ease traffic jam notorious with the road during morning and evening hours.
Upon completion, phase 3 of Ngong Road will have five footbridges and five lanes, with walkways and cycle tracks on both sides.
The project had been set for completion last July but challenges such as Covid-19 delayed its progress. Another key challenge was the relocatation of electricity, water and sewer lines.
“The pandemic has forced the contractor to scale down road construction and reduce the workforce in a bid to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines,” Kura’s corporate communications manager Stephen Njogu said.
Japanese firm World Kaihatsu Kogyo upgraded the 1st phase of Ngong Road -a stretch between Kenya National Library and Prestige Plaza-to a dual carriageway, the first phase of the road expansion plan cost Sh1.3 billion. It was completed on December 17, 2017.
Phase 2 covered four kilometres and starts from Prestige Plaza to Dagoretti Corner. It was concluded on April 30 this year by the same Japanese contractors at a cost of Sh2 billion.
Phase 3 of Ngong Road dualling construction project is being carried out by chinese firm China Qinjian.
Kenya continues to invest heavily in road construction, a move it sees as a catalyst for economic growth.
