Grid Africa, a premier renewable energy provider with operations spanning Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, and Kenya, has secured a landmark agreement with Huawei, the global technology giant, to establish a 72-megawatt (MW) solar power infrastructure dedicated to powering mines across Zimbabwe.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step forward in bolstering energy efficiency and sustainability for Zimbabwe’s mining sector, especially critical as recent power shortages have resulted in an estimated US$500 million in lost revenue for mining companies.

By easing demand on the national power grid, this alliance aims to cut operational costs and ensure a reliable, uninterrupted power supply, ultimately enhancing continuity for the mining operations involved.

Norman Moyo, CEO of Grid Africa, highlighted the partnership’s impact on the mining industry, stating, “Through this groundbreaking collaboration with Huawei, we’re set to bring transformative benefits to Zimbabwe’s mines.

The integration of solar energy not only optimizes power usage but also ensures a sustainable energy source that enhances operational efficiency and financial stability across the sector.”

Mr. Xia Hesheng, President of Huawei Digital Power for Sub-Saharan Africa, reinforced Huawei’s dedication to sustainability and technological advancement, saying, “We’re thrilled to combine our solar expertise with Grid Africa to empower Zimbabwe’s mining industry with clean, reliable energy.

This partnership showcases our commitment to sustainable development, long-term operational resilience, and innovation in industrial energy solutions.”

Adopting solar energy within mining operations brings substantial benefits: reduced dependency on the national grid, significant cost savings, and increased resilience with a stable power source.

The 72MW project is expected to create between 1,152 and 3,744 jobs (direct and indirect) and contribute to foreign currency savings by reducing power imports.

With Huawei’s global expertise in energy technology, this collaboration highlights the integration of state-of-the-art solutions with a strong commitment to sustainability.

The 72MW solar agreement between Grid Africa and Huawei sets a new standard for sustainable energy solutions, showcasing how corporations can improve operational efficiency, champion environmental responsibility, and drive transformative progress in industrial energy practices.
