ExxonMobil Plans 35-Well Exploration Program to Expand Guyana’s Stabroek Block

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

ExxonMobil is seeking to broaden its offshore operations in Guyana with plans for a significant new exploration and appraisal campaign in the prolific Stabroek Block, one of the world’s most successful recent oil discoveries.

The company has applied to Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for approval to carry out a drilling program involving up to 35 exploration and appraisal wells across four offshore prospect areas.

While the precise drilling locations have yet to be finalized, the campaign is expected to begin in 2028 and continue through the end of 2033.

The proposed exploration wells are intended to identify additional oil and gas resources, while appraisal wells will help determine the size and commercial potential of any discoveries.

The program would run alongside other ongoing drilling activities in the Stabroek Block as ExxonMobil and its partners continue to develop the basin.

ExxonMobil is already advancing several major projects in the block, including the Uaru, Whiptail and Hammerhead developments, which are expected to support future production growth.

The company has steadily expanded its operations in Guyana following a series of high-profile discoveries that have reshaped the country’s energy sector.

According to Guyana’s EPA, the proposed exploration and appraisal program is not expected to create significant environmental impacts on its own.

However, regulators have indicated that a cumulative impact assessment will be required to evaluate the combined effects of multiple drilling activities planned across the region.

The Stabroek Block has become a cornerstone of ExxonMobil’s global upstream portfolio, delivering a string of successful discoveries and helping establish Guyana as one of the fastest-growing oil-producing nations.

In the first quarter of the year, production in Guyana surpassed 900,000 barrels per day, marking another milestone for the offshore developments.

ExxonMobil is also preparing to expand production capacity further through its fifth floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel in Guyana, which is expected to achieve first oil in 2026.

If approved, the new drilling campaign could pave the way for additional discoveries and reinforce the long-term importance of the Stabroek Block in meeting future energy demand.

The results may also influence the pace of future project developments and strengthen Guyana’s position as a key player in the global offshore oil industry.
