SASSA Confirms May 2026 SRD Grant Payment Dates — New WhatsApp Service Introduced

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

Millions of South Africans who rely on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant can now mark their calendars after the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) confirmed the official COVID-19 SRD payment dates for May 2026.

According to the latest announcement, SRD grant payments for May 2026 will be processed between:

  • 21–22 May 2026
  • 27–28 May 2026

Beneficiaries are encouraged to check their payment status regularly and ensure their banking details remain updated to avoid delays.

SASSA Launches WhatsApp Self-Service Channel

In a move aimed at improving accessibility and reducing congestion at local offices and call centres, SASSA has also announced the introduction of a new WhatsApp self-service channel for COVID-19 SRD beneficiaries.

The agency says the platform will allow beneficiaries to quickly access important SRD-related information directly through WhatsApp without needing to physically visit a SASSA office.

The service is automated and designed to assist users with:

  • SRD grant information
  • Application updates
  • Status checks
  • General enquiries

Beneficiaries can access the service using the following WhatsApp number:

082 601 0111

Relief for Beneficiaries

The introduction of the WhatsApp platform is expected to bring relief to many grant recipients who often face long queues and high call volumes when seeking assistance.

Digital access has become increasingly important as SASSA continues modernising its services to better serve millions of vulnerable South Africans.

The SRD grant remains a crucial source of support for unemployed and low-income individuals across the country, especially amid ongoing economic pressures and rising living costs.

Important Reminder

SASSA has urged beneficiaries to remain cautious of scams and only use official communication channels when seeking information or assistance regarding grants and payments.

Recipients should also avoid sharing personal information with unknown individuals claiming to represent SASSA.

As payment dates approach, beneficiaries are advised to monitor official SASSA platforms for any updates or schedule changes.
