Angolan government officials recently inaugurated the 26.14-MW Saurimo solar park in the Lunda Sul province, marking a significant step towards clean energy production in the country.

The solar park is expected to generate enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 171,000 people.

The Saurimo solar farm is part of a larger initiative that includes seven parks totaling 370 MWp, spread across various provinces in Angola.

Once all these parks are operational by the end of the year, the country aims to reduce its diesel consumption by around 1.4 million litres, further promoting sustainable energy practices in the region.

What is the total investment for Angola’s 370 MWp solar park initiative?

  • The total investment for Angola’s 370 MWp solar park initiative is estimated to be EUR 538.6 million.
  • The initiative includes seven solar parks spread across various provinces in Angola.
  • The completion of all seven parks is expected by the end of the year.
  • Once operational, the solar parks are projected to reduce diesel consumption by around 1.4 million litres.
  • The goal of the initiative is to promote sustainable energy practices in the region and increase access to clean energy for the population.

Angola’s current installed capacity is estimated at 5.7 GW but only 70 percent is in use.  The country’s current energy mix consists of 61.8 percent hydropower, 37.6 percent other fossil fuels and 0.6 percent hybrid (solar/fossil fuel).

Several hydro and solar projects are also being developed and expected to come online over the next two to five years.
