The interconnection transmission and distribution line for the hydroelectric power supply of the Samba Ngallo Dam project in Guinea will reach the shores of The Gambia in 2019, Officials from The Gambia River Basin Development Project (OMVG) have said.
The project is part of Gambia road-map to provide cheap and clean energy. It will also open up the West African energy market.
Gambia’s minister of energy Fafa Sanyang said they are targeting to supply the entire West Africa with energy adding that they were working on transmission and distribution lines from Gambia to Senegal.
The work will involve construction of the extension of West Africa power pool transmission network, known as the OMVG interconnection and the construction of 15 substations to be built in Gambia.
In terms of energy production and distribution the OMVG is given top priority. The OMVG transmission line construction has 16 contractors and materials for the interconnection lines are already on the ground.
According to the minister of environment Lamin Dibba, a lot of environmental impact studies especially on ecosystems and mangroves are being carried out.
The four countries have signed the contracts; they include Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Guinea Conakry.
