Construction has begun in earnest on a floating footbridge in Kenya that will connect Mombasa Island to the mainland south.
The Likoni floating footbridge will comprise a 529 m long floating section, and 54 m long approaches on either side of the floating span.
The project is being undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation at a cost of Ksh1.7 billion. Completion date has been set for November this year. upon completion, the project will end perennial human congestion at vital busy crossing channel, says Coast Regional Commissioner (RC) John Elungata.
“The new Likoni floating footbridge will be for the exclusive use of pedestrians as an alternative to the ferries, said Mr Elungata.
The development comes at a time when enforcing social distancing at the Likoni channel due to Covid-19 proves to be difficult.
It is estimated that more than 300,000 people and 6,000 vehicles cross the busy channel daily using MV Jambo, MV Kwale, MV Likoni, MV Kilindini and MV Nyayo.
