Africa could be the next frontier for oil and gas development thanks to the planned mega projects. In this article, we look at the biggest oil and gas projects in Africa and the cost of their construction:

Tanzania LNG Liquefaction Plant

The Tanzania Liquefied Natural Gas Project (TLNGP) also Likong’o-Mchinga Liquefied Natural Gas Project (LMLNGP), is a planned liquefied natural gas processing plant in Tanzania. It is one of the mega construction projects in Tanzania.

Construction of this mega project in Tanzania is expected to kick off in 2022 and completed in 2028.Expected to cost USD30 billion, the project will be the first and the most expensive liquefied natural gas plant in the country.

Rovuma LNG Liquefaction Plant

Rovuma liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is a 15.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) LNG export facility planned to be developed to liquefy and market gas resources from three reservoirs in the Area 4 block of the Rovuma Basin, offshore Mozambique. The final investment decision (FID) on the multi-billion-dollar Rovuma LNG project has been postponed twice due to coronavirus pandemic and the oil price collapse. Expected to cost $23.6 billion, Rovuma LNG is set to be one of the largest gas project in Africa.

Mozambique LNG Project

The Mozambique LNG Project entails designing, building and operating an integrated Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant, including offshore extraction, underwater pipeline, onshore processing plant, as well as ancillary support facilities. The Total led project recently received about $15 billion debt financing  to part-finance the project construction. Production has been set for 2024.

Ogidigben Gas Revolution Industrial Park

Gas Revolution Industrial Park(GRIP), Ogidigben, is  aplanned projrct in Nigeria set to cover 2700 hectares with fertilizer, methanol, petrochemicals, & aluminium plants located in the park. It project has already been designated as a Tax Free Zone by the Federal Government. The project is valued at about $20B and will be undertaken through a Public-Private Partnership model. However the projrect has failed to take off in earnest due to ethnic rivalry between the Ijaw and the Itsekiri and inability to get enough investors.

Zabazaba and Etan Integrated Development Project

Also in the top 5 list of biggest oil and projects in Africa are the Zabazaba and the Etan oil fields. They are located in oil prospecting lease (OPL) 245 offshore Nigeria in the Niger Delta of the Gulf of Guinea, in water depths ranging from 1,200m-2,400m. The oil and gas fields form part of an integrated project, which is being jointly developed by Nigerian Agip Exploration (NAE) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO).

Nigerian Agip Exploration (NAE) is also serving as the operator for the project.First production from the $13.5bn integrated development project is expected in 2020.

It is important to say that majority of these biggest oil and gas projects in Africa are still struggling to find funding and developers. Other governments are still working to compensate land owners before projects can kick off.
