Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) says it has invited qualified companies to tender for the construction of a Sh37 billion JKIA runway which expected to start in June this year.
The project is partly being funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) which has approved a loan of Sh16.1 billion for the runway project.
Besides providing financial support for the runway, the bank is also responsible for the design of the path.
The 4.8-kilometre runway which is 75 metres wide,is designed to handle larger aircraft. It is 4.2 kilometres long and 60 metres wide.

Last years,KAA chief executive officer Jonny Andersen said that the technology of the proposed facility will meet the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s category II specifications
Andersen said that the JKIA runway will help reduce mishaps on the path because it will nearly double the aircraft movement, from 25 to 45 aeroplanes per hour.
The technology being used in the new runaway, said Mr Andersen, will enable operations in bad weather thus avoiding diversion of aircraft.
