TDOT Announces Nighttime Closures on I‑65 and US‑31W in Sumner County for Bridge Construction

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced a series of planned nighttime closures on Interstate 65 (I‑65) and U.S. Route 31W (US‑31W/State Route 41) in Sumner County.

The closures will support critical bridge construction as part of the ongoing I‑65 Phase 3 Widening and Improvements project.

The closures are scheduled to take place daily from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. beginning Sunday, November 16, and are expected to continue through December 4, weather permitting.

TDOT officials say the overnight work window will allow crews to safely set steel beams for a new I‑65 overpass that crosses US‑31W.

Nightly Closure Schedule

The closure pattern will vary nightly, alternating between lane restrictions and full road closures. Key dates and impacts include:

Date I‑65 Closure US‑31W (SR 41) Closure
Nov 16 Southbound inside lane Northbound closed
Nov 17–18 Northbound inside lane Northbound closed
Nov 19 Northbound fully closed over US‑31W Both directions closed
Nov 20 Southbound inside lane Both directions closed
Nov 23 Southbound inside lane Both directions closed
Nov 24 Northbound inside lane Both directions closed
Nov 25 Northbound fully closed over US‑31W Both directions closed
Dec 1 Southbound fully closed over US‑31W Both directions closed
Dec 2–3 Northbound inside lane Southbound closed

Motorists should anticipate delays and plan alternate routes when closures are in effect. TDOT emphasizes that the schedule is subject to change due to weather or construction progress.

Detours and Motorist Guidance

During full closures, traffic will be diverted off I‑65 at the US‑31W exit and guided back onto the interstate via entrance ramps.

Motorists are urged to follow posted signage, obey all traffic instructions, and reduce speed through the work zone.

Project Context

The I‑65 Phase 3 project spans mile markers 95–99, covering portions of Sumner and southern Davidson counties. It includes:

  • Adding travel lanes in each direction

  • Reconstructing and replacing bridges

  • Upgrading interchanges for improved traffic flow

These improvements are designed to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and accommodate future regional growth. The US‑31W overpass work is a crucial component of this broader effort, allowing TDOT to modernize a key corridor for commuter and commercial traffic alike.

What Drivers Should Know

  • Overnight Travel: Drivers traveling through the corridor between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. should anticipate delays and plan alternative routes.

  • Safety: Adhering to posted signage and construction zone rules is essential to prevent accidents.

  • Updates: TDOT encourages drivers to stay informed through local news and official updates regarding potential schedule changes.

While these nighttime closures may cause temporary inconvenience, the upgrades will deliver long-term improvements in traffic safety, efficiency, and reliability for residents and commercial operators in Sumner County.
