South Africa is constructing a major wall along its border with Mozambique a move it hopes will help bolster security and tackle cross-border crime, especially vehicle theft, between the country and Mozambique.

The concrete wall, also referred to as New Jersey Barriers, will run for a stretch of eight kilometres, starting from the boundary of the Isimangaliso Wetlands Park and moving to the western boundary of Tembe Elephant Park.

The project is being undertaken in phases. The first phase encompasses an 8-kilometer stretch adjacent to Tembe Elephant Park.

It will be succeeded by the second phase, which extends another 8 kilometers near the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and the third phase, spanning 9 kilometers from the western boundary of Tembe Elephant Park to the Pongolo River.

The government of South Africa has earmarked approximately $2.7 million for the project.
