Keen to tackle frequent power outages and high electricity bills, Kenyan cement producer Mombasa Cement is building a 36 MW wind farm in the coastal town of Kilifi as it plans to unveil new grinding plant in the coming month.
Construction of the wind farm started this year on part of the firm’s land in Vipingo area, to address outages says Mombasa Cement head of plant Koppal Srikantaiah.
”There has been a lot of challenges, too much power interruptions, in 2016 we lost an 850 kilowatts motor,” he said.
The project will consist of 12 turbines of three megawatts each as the Mombasa Cement works with the State utility firm to ensure it has high-power voltage line from Kaloleni substation.
He said current sales have increased particularly in the coastal region due to the high demand for cement being produced.
In 2009 he said they used to sell 65 tonnes per day but currently they are selling over 1000 tonnes of cement.
