A Chinese contractor China Jianxi wants Ksh2.1 billion from Kenya’s social security fund(NSSF) for a cancelled contract, MPs have been told.

Acting managing trustee Anthony Omerikwa said that the China firm is seeking compensation for the stalled Phase 6 of Nyayo Estate Embakasi.

The firm was supposed to build 234 units but has since built 52 units.

Appearing before National Assembly’s Public Investment Committee Omerikwa said that NSSF board terminated the contract after the Nairobi County government refused to approve its plans to build houses in the area.

But MPs wanted to know why the NSSF board had not sought clearance from City Hall before signing the contract.

In March,China Jianxi demanded to be paid as compensation Ksh6.8 billion as compensation for stalled project in Nairobi City Centre, Hazina Towers. The compensation was later revised to Sh870 million.

Initially planned for 39 floors, Hazina Tower was scaled down to 15 floors owing to structural weaknesses that cannot support the initial planned of 180 metres.

Had construction of the building continued and completed as initially planned, Hazina Tower would have been the tallest in Kenya and third in Africa after the Carlton Centre in South Africa and Cairo Tower in Egypt.

The design of the project was to mimic a Maasai moran standing with his legs crossed and leaning on a spear.
