SsangYong Engineering & Construction (E’C), a subsidiary of the Global Sae-A Group and a prominent international player in the construction sector, has successfully completed the Bata International Airport Passenger Terminal.

The milestone was commemorated in a special ceremony held on October 10, attended by Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, high-ranking government officials, and representatives from the local community.

During the ceremony, President Obiang, who visited South Korea earlier this year for the Korea-Africa Summit, expressed his gratitude for the project, stating, “As we celebrate our 56th Independence Day, the people of Equatorial Guinea have received an incredible gift. SsangYong E’C has once again delivered a stunning and majestic airport, showcasing its reliability and setting a new benchmark for quality in our nation’s construction industry.”

Bata, the second-largest city in Equatorial Guinea, is rapidly establishing itself as a key hub in West Africa, serving as an essential gateway to the continent.

The newly constructed passenger terminal, which took 36 months to complete, spans one basement level and three additional floors, with a capacity to process up to two million passengers annually.

The project includes various ancillary structures such as annex buildings, parking facilities, and access roads, along with advanced baggage-handling systems and boarding bridges.

Awarded through a “Design-Build” and “Fast Track” process, SsangYong E’C managed the project from initial planning to construction. The design was led by Heerim Architects, with project supervision by the French firm CIEC.

The completion of the Bata airport represents a significant achievement for SsangYong E’C, which is now responsible for constructing two of Equatorial Guinea’s three international airports, having previously completed Mongomeyen International Airport in 2018.

Since entering the Equatorial Guinean market in 2011, the company has established itself as a reliable partner, successfully managing a range of projects including VIP guest houses, parks, hotels, hospitals, churches, schools, and water infrastructure, thereby enhancing Korea’s presence in Africa.

A spokesperson for SsangYong E’C stated, “Leveraging our proven expertise and trusted reputation, we plan to expand into new markets, including Costa Rica and Central and South America, while continuing to reinforce our position as a global leader in the construction industry.”
