CAPE TOWN – ACCIONA Energía has reached financial close for two wind farms in South Africa with a combined capacity of 194 megawatts, marking a significant investment in the country’s renewable energy sector.
The Spanish renewable energy company announced on December 12, 2025, that construction on the Zen and Bergrivier wind farms will commence in the coming weeks.
Located between Gouda and Saron in the Western Cape province, the projects represent a major step forward in South Africa’s energy transition efforts.
Project Details
The Zen wind farm will have a capacity of 100 MW, while the Bergrivier facility will generate 94 MW.
Together, the installations are expected to produce approximately 580 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, enough to power thousands of homes and businesses across the region.
Under a 20-year power purchase agreement, Etana Energy will acquire all renewable electricity generated by both facilities, ensuring long-term revenue stability for the projects.
Environmental and Economic Impact
Once operational in mid-2027, the wind farms are projected to offset around 600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, contributing significantly to South Africa’s climate goals and the reduction of its carbon footprint.
The projects have already secured commitments from several major corporate clients, including property developer Growthpoint, Cape Town’s iconic V&A Waterfront, mining companies Tharisa Minerals and Petra Diamonds, and manufacturing firm Autocast.
Partnership Structure
ACCIONA Energía will maintain majority ownership with a 51% stake in the projects, while a joint venture between H1 Capital and Chariot Limited holds the remaining 49%.
This partnership model combines ACCIONA’s renewable energy expertise with local investment and development capabilities.
The investment underscores growing international confidence in South Africa’s renewable energy market, particularly as the country works to address persistent electricity challenges and transition away from coal-dependent power generation.
Looking Ahead
With commissioning planned for mid-2027, the Zen and Bergrivier wind farms will add much-needed clean energy capacity to South Africa’s grid.
The projects align with the country’s Integrated Resource Plan and its commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement.
ACCIONA Energía’s expansion in South Africa reflects broader trends in the renewable energy sector, where wind and solar projects are becoming increasingly cost-competitive with traditional fossil fuel generation while delivering substantial environmental benefits.
