SASSA Announces COVID-19 SRD Payment Dates for January 2026

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that beneficiaries of the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant will receive their payments between 23-28 January 2026.

The announcement comes as millions of South Africans continue to rely on the temporary assistance programme designed to support those facing financial hardship.

Understanding the COVID-19 SRD Grant

According to SASSA’s regulations, the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant is available to individuals who require temporary financial assistance and have insufficient means to support themselves.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the COVID-19 SRD grant, applicants must meet several specific criteria. The person must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or hold a special permit under the Special Angolan Dispensation, Lesotho Exemption Permit Dispensation, or Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Dispensation.

Asylum seekers with valid Section 22 permits or visas are also eligible, provided they are registered in the Department of Home Affairs database or on SASSA’s social grant database with a unique system-generated identifying number.

Applicants must be between 18 and 60 years of age and currently residing within South Africa’s borders. Importantly, they cannot be residents in government-funded or subsidized institutions, and must not unreasonably refuse employment or educational opportunities.

How to Apply and Get Assistance

SASSA has made multiple channels available for beneficiaries to access information and apply for the grant:

  • Toll-free number: 0800 60 10 11
  • Website: www.sassa.gov.za
  • Online applications for grants: services.sassa.gov.za
  • Online applications for COVID-19 SRD: srd.sassa.gov.za
  • Email: GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za
  • WhatsApp: 082 054 0016

The agency operates under the motto: “paying the right social grant, to the right person, at the right time and place. NJALO!” (meaning “always” in isiZulu).

As the payment window approaches, SASSA encourages beneficiaries to ensure their banking details are up to date and to familiarize themselves with the qualification requirements to avoid any delays in receiving their assistance.
