Seriti Green group plans to build 900MW of renewable wind energy projects over the next three years, with the first phase being the 155MW Ummbila Emoyeni facility in Mpumalanga province.
Construction on the facility is currently underway and is expected to be completed in mid-2026, costing just under R5 billion.
The Ummbila Emoyeni 900MW hybrid renewable energy facility will be the largest renewable hybrid energy facility in South Africa.
Based in the Highveld, the project is set to redefine the Mpumalanga province’s journey towards a just energy transition, located between Bethal and Morgenzon in Mpumalanga.
The entire project has been designated as a Strategic Integrated Project by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, and has already received its Environmental Authorisation from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, a critical requirement to start construction.
Ummbila Emoyeni, the first phase of this flagship project of 155MW, will supply Seriti’s coal mining operations with 75% of its power requirements of its power requirements via a wheeling agreement with Eskom, expected to commence commercial operation in 2025.
The remainder of the 900MW project is expected to be fully commissioned by 2027, by which time it will provide electricity for the equivalent of ~500,000 South African households.
In addition, Seriti Green is in the early development phase of a 1.3 GW project called Phefumula Emoyeni, which is adjacent to Ummbila Emoyeni in the Mpumalanga province.
