Jurupa Valley, CA – December 19, 2025 – Swedish construction giant Skanska has secured a significant infrastructure contract in Southern California, announcing today a $59 million agreement with Riverside County to replace the aging Mission Boulevard Bridge over the Santa Ana River.
The project represents a major infrastructure investment for the rapidly growing community of Jurupa Valley, addressing both safety concerns and modernization needs for a critical transportation corridor that serves thousands of residents daily.
Elevating Standards, Literally
The new bridge will rise 1.2 to 1.8 meters higher than its predecessor, a design change driven by updated flood safety requirements and modern engineering standards.
This elevation increase reflects lessons learned from decades of flood management along the Santa Ana River, one of Southern California’s most significant waterways.
The replacement structure will feature Mission-style architecture with a distinctive parabolic soffit, harmonizing with the region’s Spanish colonial aesthetic while incorporating contemporary engineering principles.
This design choice honors the area’s cultural heritage while delivering 21st-century infrastructure.
Comprehensive Scope Beyond the Bridge Deck
Skanska’s contract encompasses far more than simply replacing bridge spans. The project scope includes relocating existing utilities that currently run along or beneath the bridge, implementing seismic retrofitting measures to meet California’s stringent earthquake safety standards, and upgrading drainage systems to handle increased stormwater flows.
Environmental mitigation measures will also be integrated throughout construction, addressing concerns related to the Santa Ana River ecosystem and surrounding habitats.
Strategic Addition to Skanska’s Portfolio
The contract value, approximately SEK 580 million in Swedish currency, will be recorded in Skanska’s US order bookings for the fourth quarter of 2025.
This project adds to Skanska’s growing portfolio of civil infrastructure work across the United States, where the company has established itself as a major player in transportation and bridge construction.
For Riverside County, the project represents a commitment to maintaining and upgrading infrastructure in communities that have experienced significant population growth in recent decades.
Jurupa Valley, incorporated in 2011, continues to develop its transportation network to meet the demands of its expanding residential and commercial sectors.
Construction timelines and traffic management plans during the replacement work have not yet been publicly detailed, though such projects typically require careful coordination to minimize disruption to the thousands of motorists who rely on Mission Boulevard as a key east-west arterial through the region.
