Fidelity Investments experienced a widespread service outage Monday morning, paralyzing access to its website, mobile applications, and Active Trader platform just as U.S. markets kicked off a major rally.
The disruption sparked a wave of frustration among retail and institutional investors unable to log in, monitor portfolios, or execute trades during peak trading hours.
According to reports from users and monitoring site Downdetector, the outage began shortly after the opening bell on Wall Street.
Thousands of users reported being unable to log in or receiving timeout errors when attempting to access Fidelity’s services.
The timing of the incident — amid a sharp uptick in trading volumes — intensified the backlash, especially from active traders and retirement investors.
“We are aware that some clients are experiencing issues accessing Fidelity platforms. Our teams are actively working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible,” the company stated in a brief message on Reddit. No official statement has yet been published on their main website or press room.
Industry experts note that platform outages during high-volume market periods have become an increasing concern, particularly with more Americans managing their investments online.
“Reliability is everything when it comes to financial services,” said Mark Phillips, a fintech analyst. “When a major player like Fidelity goes down, it shakes confidence — not just in the platform, but in the broader digital investing ecosystem.”
While some users found temporary workarounds — such as using incognito browser windows or disabling browser extensions — most were locked out for the majority of the trading morning.
Fidelity has not confirmed whether the issue was caused by internal technical failures, increased load, or external cyber interference.
The outage underscores the critical need for contingency plans and reliable system architecture in the age of digital trading.
As the number of retail investors continues to grow and market volatility remains a constant, pressure is mounting on platforms like Fidelity to ensure uninterrupted service.
At the time of this writing, Fidelity has not provided a full explanation or an estimated time for resolution. Users are encouraged to follow official Fidelity channels and support pages for updates.
