Construction has started on a major cement plant in Uganda in Moroto area, Karamoja region.
The plant will have an output of 6000 tons per day. The factory is being set up by West International Holding Limited, a subsidiary of China West Cement Limited which has invested over 300 million USD in the region that will produce both cement and clinker.
While launching the project president Yoweri Museveni said the factory will save Uganda 380 million US Dollars of imported clinker and will create jobs while boosting the country’s economic status.
Uganda has a present cement production capacity of over 4.5 million tonnes per annum and the demand is projected to increase by 15 percent annually on the background of the booming oil and gas sector and infrastructure development.
Uganda imports over 50 percent of the clinker it uses in the production of cement and the project,it is hoped, will greatly support the government’s import substitution initiative by locally manufacturing clinker within the country.
