PMC Sanctions New Ramp and Grade Separator to Ease Traffic at SPPU Chowk

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

Relief is in sight for thousands of commuters struggling with daily congestion at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has officially sanctioned the construction of a two-lane connecting ramp and a grade separator, aiming to streamline one of the busiest intersections in the city.

The project, estimated at ₹48.28 crore, will link the existing SPPU Chowk flyover with Senapati Bapat Road, offering a direct route for vehicles heading toward Baner, Pashan, and Aundh.

By bypassing the signal-heavy junction, traffic flow is expected to improve dramatically.

“The new ramp will provide seamless connectivity for motorists and reduce bottlenecks at the Chowk, which has long been a pain point for daily commuters,” a senior PMC official said.

Shortened Design for Faster Execution

Initially, the grade separator was proposed to extend from Government Polytechnic College. However, the plan has been revised and shortened by nearly 300 metres to minimize disruption and cost.

By integrating the ramp with the grade separator, PMC hopes to expedite construction and deliver results within 24 months, including through monsoon interruptions.

Expected Benefits

  • Reduced congestion for northbound traffic from Senapati Bapat Road.

  • Smoother access to Aundh, Baner, and Pashan without negotiating the crowded intersection.

  • Improved travel time and fuel efficiency for commuters.

The move comes as part of PMC’s broader efforts to tackle traffic snarls in key parts of Pune.

With SPPU Chowk serving as a crucial link between central Pune and its western suburbs, officials say the project will play a decisive role in easing pressure on the city’s road network.

Commuters, however, remain cautiously optimistic. “It’s good news that PMC is finally addressing this issue.

We only hope the work gets completed on time and doesn’t become another long-delayed project,” said Anjali Kulkarni, a daily commuter from Aundh.

Once completed, the new infrastructure is expected to transform travel patterns across Pune’s western corridor, offering long-awaited relief to thousands of motorists.
