Afripower Launches Utility-Scale Solar Construction in Madagascar

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

Antananarivo, Madagascar – January 5, 2026 – Afripower, a leading energy producer on Madagascar’s Antananarivo Interconnected Network, has officially begun construction of a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Moramanga.

This marks a major milestone in the country’s transition toward cleaner, more sustainable energy.

The project, which will be integrated alongside Afripower’s existing Mandroseza heavy fuel oil (HFO) power station, is expected to have a total installed capacity of 40 MWp.

The first phase alone will contribute approximately 15 MWp to the national grid, with subsequent phases further expanding capacity.

By combining solar power with existing thermal generation, Afripower aims to reduce reliance on imported fuel, lower energy costs, and provide a more stable electricity supply for Madagascar’s growing population. Officials say the solar plant is a critical part of the country’s broader renewable energy strategy.

“Afripower is proud to support Madagascar’s energy transition,” said a company spokesperson. “This project demonstrates our commitment to delivering reliable, sustainable electricity while contributing to the nation’s environmental goals.”

Construction is already underway, and the first phase is expected to be operational by early 2026. Once completed, the solar plant will not only increase energy capacity but also strengthen grid resilience and reduce carbon emissions from the Mandroseza HFO power station.

The development highlights Madagascar’s growing focus on renewable energy infrastructure and Afripower’s leadership in advancing clean energy solutions on the island.
