SASSA Self-Service Portal Back Online After System Disruptions Hit Thousands of Grant Beneficiaries

PRETORIA, 11 April 2026 — The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) confirmed on 10 April 2026 that its self-service portal has been fully restored following system glitches that disrupted the eLife Certification process for an unspecified number of grant beneficiaries across the country.

In an official media statement, the agency apologised to beneficiaries who were notified to complete eLife Certification but found themselves unable to access the portal due to interface failures with other government departments, which triggered delays, system errors, and long queues at SASSA local offices.

What Is eLife Certification?

Life certification is a statutory requirement under South Africa’s Social Assistance Act. It is designed to confirm that social grant recipients are still alive and continue to meet eligibility criteria — a safeguard that prevents payments from being made to deceased or ineligible claimants.

The eLife Certification platform is SASSA’s digital upgrade to this process. Rather than requiring beneficiaries to visit local offices in person, the self-service portal enables them to complete the verification from home through biometric authentication and integration with the Department of Home Affairs via the electronic Know Your Client (eKYC) system.

What Caused the Disruption?

According to SASSA, the eLife Certification system’s dependency on real-time interfaces with other government departments created vulnerabilities that, when disrupted, cascaded into widespread access failures.

The agency stated that these inter-departmental system glitches led directly to delays and disruptions in completing eLife Certification, and in turn drove congestion at physical SASSA offices as beneficiaries scrambled to meet their verification deadlines.

SASSA did not disclose the exact number of beneficiaries affected or the duration of the outage before it was resolved.

The stakes for beneficiaries who miss the eLife Certification window are significant. SASSA’s own policy documentation states that beneficiaries who fail to complete life certification as directed may face:

When functioning correctly, SASSA says the eLife Certification portal delivers four key advantages for beneficiaries:

What Beneficiaries Should Do Now

With the portal now restored, SASSA is urging all beneficiaries who were unable to complete eLife Certification during the outage to log in and complete the process as soon as possible.

Beneficiaries who have access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer are especially encouraged to use the self-service option rather than visiting a local office.

The agency also reminded beneficiaries that life certification is required annually and that, where SASSA specifically identifies a beneficiary for immediate eLife Certification, they must comply within the stipulated timeframe regardless of their grant type or date of birth.
