Uganda has a total installed capacity of 957.7 MW, including 743 MW for hydropower. The main and base electricity supply is generated from the Nile River, primarily from the 255 MW Bujagali, the 200 MW Kiira and the 180 MW Nalubaale plants.

In total, hydropower accounts for 78 per cent of installed capacity. Here are the 7 largest hydropower stations in Uganda some of which are under construction.

Karuma hydropower dam

The Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station is a 600 MW hydropower station in Uganda under construction. When completed, it will be the largest power-generating installation in the country. The power station is located at Karuma Falls on the Victoria Nile, at the former location of the Karuma Falls. This location is approximately 2.5 kilometres  upstream of where the Masindi-Gulu Highway crosses the Nile.

Ayago Hydroelectric Power Station

Ayago Hydroelectric Power Station also Ayago Power Station, is a planned 600 megawatts (800,000 hp) hydroelectric power project to be constructed in Uganda. The power station will be located at Ayago, on the Victoria Nile, in Nwoya District, in the Acholi sub-region, in the Northern Region of Uganda. This location is close to the point where the Ayago River enters the Victoria Nile, within the confines of Murchison Falls National Park. It will be one of the largest hydropower stations in Uganda.

Oriang Hydroelectric Power Station

Oriang Hydroelectric Power Station is a proposed 400 megawatts (540,000 hp) hydroelectric power station in Uganda. The power station would be located on the Nile River, downstream of Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station, but upstream of Murchison Falls. This location is in Nwoya District, in the Northern Region of Uganda, close to the location where Oriang Stream enters the Victoria Nile. Oriang is approximately 923 metres (3,028 ft), above sea level.

Kiba Hydroelectric Power Station

Kiba Hydroelectric Power Station is a proposed 295 megawatts (396,000 hp) hydroelectric power station in Uganda. The power station would be located on the Nile River, downstream of Karuma Hydroelectric Power Station, but upstream of Murchison Falls. This location is in Nwoya District, in the Northern Region of Uganda, approximately 35 kilometres (22 mi), upstream of the boundary of Murchison Falls National Park.

Bujagali Power Station

The Bujagali Power Station is a 250 MW hydroelectric power station across the Victoria Nile that harnesses the energy of its namesake – the Bujagali Falls – in Uganda. Construction began in 2007 and concluded in 2012. It was officially inaugurated on 8 October 2012 by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Aga Khan IV in the presence of African politicians and investors.

Kiira Power Station

Kiira Power Station, sometimes spelled Kiyira Power Station, is a hydroelectric power station with an installed capacity of 200 megawatts (270,000 hp), in Uganda. The power station is located at Kimaka, a northern suburb of Jinja, Jinja District, in eastern central Uganda, approximately 6.5 kilometres (4.0 mi) northwest of the central business district of Jinja, Uganda’s second-largest industrial city.

It operates next to the Nalubaale Power Station at the point where the River Nile pours out of Lake Victoria starting its 4,000 miles (6,400 km) journey to the Mediterranean Sea.

Isimba Hydroelectric Power Station

Isimba Hydroelectric Power Station is a 183.2 megawatts (245,700 hp) hydroelectric power station commissioned on 21 March 2019 in Uganda.Construction of this dam began in April 2015 and was completed in January 2019. Commercial operations began on 21 March 2019.
