Today marks the final deadline for advance tax payment for Financial Year 2025–26 (FY26).
Taxpayers across India who have a liability of more than ₹10,000 in a year are required to make their payments by 15th September 2025 to stay compliant with the Income Tax Act.
Missing this deadline can trigger interest penalties under Sections 234B and 234C, making timely payment crucial.
Who Needs to Pay Advance Tax?
Advance tax isn’t just for businesses. It applies to:
-
Freelancers and professionals such as consultants, doctors, and lawyers.
-
Business owners earning taxable profits.
-
Salaried employees with extra income sources (rental income, capital gains, dividends, etc.).
-
Investors with earnings not fully covered by TDS.
Exemptions: Senior citizens (60+) without business income and salaried individuals whose TDS covers their entire tax liability.
How Much to Pay by Today?
For FY26, taxpayers must pay 45% of their estimated tax liability by the 15th September deadline. Earlier, 15% was due by 15th June. The remaining installments fall on 15th December (75%) and 15th March (100%).
If your income has increased since the last installment — say through capital gains or side business earnings — you must revise your estimates and pay accordingly.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

-
Section 234C: Interest applies for deferment of installments.
Both charge 1% interest per month on the unpaid amount.
